This cottage is in a fairly remote part of the country, but is easily accessible from London, very soon the smog is gone and you’re tootling
through breathtaking scenery and picturesque villages. We were on a family break during the summer holidays with our two children, another couple and their children and we were quickly very much at home in this beautifully converted old farmhouse.
The cottage is a little haven tucked away upon a hillside, in an idyllic quiet setting with plenty of fresh air and greenery. A perfect rural retreat! We spent most of evenings holed up by the inglenook fireplace chatting and catching up. As we didn't know this area very well, in the day we went exploring. There are plenty of things to do within easy driving distance. We didn't get chance to see everything but made it to a few places and had some great days out.
We had a day out at Lake Vyrnwy, a large Victorian reservoir with a spectacular dam which is set in a wonderful nature reserve which is jointly managed by the RSPB so there's lots of wildlife. The children really enjoyed the sculpture trail close to the dam which has a great little family walk with wooden carved sculptures which the children had a great time exploring. We also had a lovely afternoon tea at the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel which has great views over the lake. The hotel also has a spa and the mums disappeared for a few hours for a bit of well earned pampering.
We discovered Park Hall Countryside Experience near Oswestry, a restored Victorian farm building which had plenty of fun farmyard activities including indoor and outdoor play area, a local history museum, animal feeding and petting. Another great day out!
We also went to the Centre for Alternative Technology located just north of Machynlleth which was great for all the family, educational and run with a great wholefood restaurant with locally sourced organic produce with lovely food and delicious home-made cakes.
Although you don't have to venture too far as there are some beautiful local walks from the cottage doorstep or you could just stoke up the fire and stay put with a good book! There's an amazing collection of rare and antique books dotted around the cottage and a lovely upright piano if your feeling tinkling the ivories! All in all we had a very memorable week and will definitely be back!!
